Hey Adam, this definitely looks like a "new" tree.

Something seems to be missing from it though. I get the feeling it needs some needles or fruit.

I also think that you could break up the color. Use a different brown for the "veiny" parts that way there is a visual interest. I might also suggest that you break up the texture from the bottom to the top.

For the really bulbous areas, you could increase the cracks and spacing, to visually suggest expansion, and you could tighten up the texture in the thinner areas.

It would also make the tree seem more organic and fleshy which is something you're already started to run with... might as well push it further!

I had another suggestion!

When texturing this beast, try a twisting motion. Wrap the grain around the branches, and play with the normals that way. It will help guide the viewer's attention up, like a spiral, and it will add more motion and livelihood to the tree.
